FAQ

Do I need to have my neck and back manipulated?
No. Manipulations are very safe but not everyone likes the feeling or associated cracking or popping noise. There are other therapies available for those who prefer not to be manipulated (see Services). Regardless, not all conditions should be treated with manipulation in the first place.

How long do I need treatment?
Research shows that most conditions respond well to a few treatments spaced close together. Although various conditions require different attention, 3-4 visits over 2 weeks should resolve a typical low back pain episode. As part of the initial visit, the chiropractor will inform the patient about their condition and make a recommendation for treatment. However, the choice always remains with the patient as to what course they wish to pursue.

What is maintenance care?
Like the word suggests, maintenance care aims to maintain a certain level of functioning. Some patients find that regular chiropractic visits prevent flare ups and help manage chronic conditions. Typically people undergoing maintenance care will visit the chiropractor once every one to two months.

What are the fees?
Fees for adults are $100 for the initial visit and $55 for subsequent visits. Fees for children 12 years and under are $75 for the initial visit and $40 for subsequent visits. Custom orthotics are $450. We charge a $25 fee for missed appointments.

How long are the appointments?
Initial visits are 40 minutes and subsequent visits are 20 minutes.

What should I expect for an initial visit?
The initial visit begins with filling out a new patient form. The chiropractor then conducts a health interview focusing on the area of concern. Next an examination is conducted on the area of concern by performing range of motion, muscle, joint, neurological and orthopedic tests. The chiropractor is then able to discuss the findings of the history and examination with the patient and arrive at a diagnosis and course of therapy. Unless further studies are needed (such as x-rays or blood tests), the initial visit will end with a treatment session.

What should I expect for a subsequent visit?
Subsequent visits always begin with a few questions about the patient's health and progress. Next the chiropractor will perform a few joint, muscle or orthopedic tests to measure recovery and direct treatment for that visit. The remainder of the visit will usually involve a combination of soft tissue work (massage, myofascial release or stretching), manipulation and exercise prescription or review.

Do I need a medical doctor's referral?
No. However, Dr. Moreton believes that communicating with your other health care providers is important for holistic patient care.

Do I need x-rays?
Most muscle and joint disorders do not require x-rays and recent evidence has demonstrated adverse health affects with increased radiation. X-rays, however, may be required if a fracture or malignancy is suspected.

Do I need to wear a gown?
Gowns are not usually required and most therapies can be applied through regular clothing as long as it is not either extremely baggy or restrictive. Therapies such as myofascial release and massage may necessitate moving clothing to reach the affected area (pending patient consent).
